KAFKA’S DICK BY ALAN BENNETT - AUDITION NOTICE
The auditions for our Spring 2010 show will take place at the Bath Drama Hut on Tuesday 8 December 2009. The show will be directed by Andrew Hill and will be staged 24 - 27 March 2010 (the week before Easter).
The play is a surreal comedy and is hard to describe in a few words! However, here goes:
Tedious Kafka aficionado Sydney and his frustrated wife Linda are visited by a reincarnated Franz Kafka and his friend Max Brod. Brod has disobeyed Kafka’s instruction to destroy his works after his death, but Kafka's wish for anonymity is due to a very embarrassing personal shortcoming. This surreal play includes a supernatural tortoise, hidden quiche and a finale set in Heaven!
The cast is as follows (as ever, the ages are provisional, approximate and non-binding!):
Franz Kafka - a dead, reclusive author, 30 - 45
Max Brod - his less famous friend, also an author, 30 - 45
Sydney - Kafka groupie and insurance man, 40 - 60
Linda - his neglected, frustrated wife 40 - 60
Father - of Sydney that is. Semi-gaga but still fighting, 60 - 90
(NB: at a pinch this role could be changed to Sydney’s mother)
Herman K - Kafka’s father, a coarse bully, 45 - 65
Julie - Kafka’s mother, smothering, 45 - 65
The latter part only appears in the first version of Bennett’s play, and Andrew has not yet finally decided whether to use this or the second version.
Scripts are available from Andrew if you would like to read the play before auditioning. He is also very willing to separately audition anyone who cannot make the 8 December session.

The 2009 AGM was held on 18th October at the Rondo Theatre from 7.30pm. Paul Olding was duly elected to be an additional member of the RTC committee. Sue Sedgwick stepped down from her position on the committee, but will remain an active member of the group, her experience and theatrical knowledge will be greatly missed. The RTC's next production, ROAD, is well into rehearsal now and is looking like it will be a fantastic show - so be sure you get tickets whilst you can!
Finally, the 2010 Summer production has been confirmed as "The Merry Wives of Windsor" - to be directed by Jenny Riddle.

"Road" by Jim Cartwright to be directed by Alex Needham, Autumn (November) 2009.
5pm, Sunday 26th October 2008 at the Rondo Theatre.
Road is the first play written by Jim Cartwright, and was first produced in 1986.
The play explores the lives of the people in a deprived, working class area of Lancashire during the government of Margaret Thatcher, a time of high unemployment in the north of England. Despite its explicit nature, it was considered extremely effective in portraying the desperation of people's lives at this time, as well as containing a great deal of humour. The play won a number of awards and was voted the 36th best play of the 20th century in a poll by the Royal National Theatre.
It was made for television by renowned director Alan Clarke and starred many young actors who later became well-known including Jane Horrocks, David Thewlis, Moya Brady and Lesley Sharp.
