Newly widowed clergy wife, Grace, has spent a life time on her best behaviour and is at last enjoying the freedom to do and say as she pleases, usually to the new female vicar, Sarah. The return of Grace’s eccentric missionary sister, Ruth, prompts disturbing revelations, which force her to confront Bardolph’s ghost and the truth of their marriage. Meanwhile, Sarah reveals some unclergy-like credentials of her own to Grace’s therapist daughter, Jo. Can God be trusted to do anything right at all, or is the whole thing a divine exercise in trial and error.
Set in a vicarage garden in the present day, this sharp edged comedy with probing wit, was a massive sell-out at the 2006 Chichester Festival, with Penelope Keith playing the lead role of Grace
Grace – 50/60s – she is described as ‘an ageless fifty/sixty something who, in spite of her advancing years and brisk manner, has the endearing energy and poise of a younger woman.’
This play has a real ‘feel good’ factor about it and will be enormously popular with the audiences whilst having more than enough about it to keep the actors engaged.
