Social play reading:
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
by James Goss and Arvind Ethan David
after Douglas Adams
Tuesday 24 September, 6pm for a 6.30pm start
at the Rondo Theatre, St. Saviours Road, Bath, BA1 6RT
“Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen. These are the offices of Dirk Gentlyʼs Holistic Detective Agency. The term ʻholisticʼ refers to my belief in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things.”
Goss and Davidʼs stage play was born of a reaction to being asked to direct the school play when they were just sixteen. With the “careless hubris of teenagers”, they decided to adapt Douglas Adamsʼ Dirk Gentlyʼs Holistic Detective Agency, from which sprang a behemoth of a play spanning four billion years, sleight of hand and... a horse... trapped in the upstairs bathroom. Not an easy one to stage, especially for a pair of breathless beginners. But somehow they did it and, in the most ʻDirk Gentlyʼ way possible, it snowballed into something so extraordinary that Douglas Adams himself went to watch one of the performances. What an outcome for two Adams enthusiasts writing a play on the floor of their teenage dormitory! So get ready for a murder mystery featuring aliens, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and a detective who may or may not be a vampire.

Weʼre excited to be hosting this script as part of our ongoing play reading programme and think youʼll really enjoy it too! If youʼre a fan of science fiction, detective stories and comedies, thisʼll definitely be up your street. Come and discover why this is one easier read than staged!
We'll read the script through in full, taking turns with characters and topping teas up whilst we discuss the play. We love these events as it's a chance to get to know a play in a relaxed environment and often results in some fascinating discussions regarding staging, writing and dream casting! There's no pressure to read if you don't want to either but we'd love to see you there!
6pm for a 6:30 start (if you might be late, come anyway!)
Bring your own soft refreshments - if you've got something on theme for the play, even better!

Strangers, lovers, devils. 1930ʼs Moscow is full of strange folk. But who is the woman crying over her bouquet of yellow flowers? What the hell happened at the Arts Theatre last night? And... is that a human sized cat?
Based on the posthumously published novel 'The Master and Margarita' by Mikhail Bulgakov, Edward Kempʼs stage adaptation takes the audience on a swirling journey of captivating surrealism featuring romance, devil-pacts and of course, a play within a play. Thought to be based on Bulgakovʼs own experience as an oppressed creative in the USSR and his legacy-defining relationship with his third wife Yelena (she safeguarded the novel until publication was considered permissible), The Master and Margarita is considered Bulgakovʼs most seminal work.
First published in 2004, Kempʼs English language adaptation does a wonderful job of deftly guiding the audience through the plot without sacrificing the comedy and poignancy of Bulgakovʼs original novel.
For those who loved getting to know Bulgakov as a character in our recent production 'Collaborators', The Master and Margarita is a fantastic opportunity to get to know him as a writer. See the parallels of Bulgakovʼs own life within this wonderful piece of romantic-surrealism and find yourself questioning whether you too would flinch if confronted by the devil himself.
Note: 'The Master and Margarita' will be part of the Rondo Theatre Companyʼs 2025 production programme so this is a great chance to get to know the play before auditions open next year.
We'll read the script through in full, taking turns with characters and discussing the play (and believe me, there's a lot to be said about this one!). There's no pressure to read if you don't want to but we'd love to see you there all the same.
6pm for a 6:30 start (if you might be late, come anyway!)
Bring your own snacks to share but we're lucky enough to be hosted at St James Wine Vaults for this event so please make use of the bar on the ground floor. Soft drinks are of course available.
Please note, the Gallery Room at St James Wine Vaults is accessed by a flight of stairs. If you have any accessibility needs do let us know.

Coming soon to the Rondo Theatre:
A Streetcar Named Desire
by Tennessee Williams
Wednesday 17 - Saturday 30 November, 7.30pm
at the Rondo Theatre, St. Saviours Road, Bath, BA1 6RT
Fading Southern Belle, Blanche DuBois, depends on the kindness of strangers and is adrift in the world. When she arrives to stay with her sister Stella in a crowded, boisterous corner of New Orleans, her delusions of grandeur bring her into conflict with Stella’s crude, brutish husband Stanley. Eventually their violent collision course causes Blanche’s fragile sense of identity to crumble, threatening to destroy her sanity and her one chance of happiness.
Williams’ steamy and shocking landmark drama is one of the most influential plays of the 21st Century. This production will delve into the psyche of the two women that orbit each other, Blanche and Stella, as well as the impact of mental illness, and the misogyny that was a mainstay of the era.
