Social Play Reading
Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake, adapted by John Constable
Tuesday 13th October – 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start
The Rondo Theatre, St. Saviours Road, BATH, BA1 6RT
The Rondo Theatre Company is delighted to host an adaptation of Mervyn Peake's gothic masterpiece in time for the spooky season!
In a world bound by iron laws and dead rituals, two young men are struggling to make their way: Steerpike, the renegade kitchen-boy who seduces and murders his way up the social ladder, and Titus Groan, heir to Gormenghast, who comes to threaten its very existence.
Featuring a fearsome cast of grotesque yet unforgettable characters - from the murderous and mountainous chef Swelter to the cat-obsessed lady of the castle Countess Groan - Gormenghast is a whirlwind Gothic fantasy that not only seeks to ridicule the endless rituals that have governed British aristocracy for centuries, but also showcase how bloody and violent ambition can truly be when you have nothing to lose and everything to gain...

It’s Sylvia and Marek’s wedding. Over the course of a hot summer’s day, a family gathers to welcome a newcomer into their midst. But as the beer and vodka flows and the guests hit the dancefloor, passions boil over and the limits of love are tested.
Described by one reviewer as ‘Chekhov on Heineken’, the play blends humour and tragedy, exploring complex family dynamics, love, loss and the scars left by decades of social and economic history. Beth Steel’s new play is a hilarious and heartbreaking portrayal of a larger than life family struggling to come to terms with a changing world.
