The Rondo Theatre Company are thrilled to be working with BAFTA and Olivier award winning writer, John Hodge, to bring ‘Collaborators’ to the Rondo Theatre in Bath this week.

‘Collaborators’ is a darkly comic satire of Stalinist Russia, with a descent from hilarity to tragedy that has rarely been portrayed quite so well on the stage – winning John Hodge the 2012 Olivier Award for Best Play.

Better known as the screenwriter for The Beach, Shallow Grave, and Trainspotting, John Hodge is assisting with the Rondo Theatre Company’s production of ‘Collaborators’ and will be attending the performances on the Friday and Saturday nights to take part in a Q&A session after the show.

I was thrilled to learn that ‘Collaborators’ is to be staged at the lovely Rondo Theatre,” says John Hodge, I have met the wonderful cast and I am really looking forward to this production in my adopted home town.

Although the play is a work of fiction, it is inspired by true events from the life of Mikhail Bulgakov, best known for his novel ‘The Master and Margarita.’ It follows Bulgakov’s surreal journey as he is given the offer of a lifetime: write a play about Stalin’s early life, or else. Not something one easily turns down in 1930s Moscow!

For me,” says John Hodge, Stalin and Bulgakov are a classic double act, the schemer and the innocent, the spider and the fly, playing out their comedy against a backdrop of one of the twentieth century’s defining horrors.

‘Collaborators’ features a cast of 14 local actors from the Rondo Theatre Company, the performing arm of the Rondo Theatre since 1982.

Speaking about the production, director Matt Nation said, It’s been an incredible experience directing Collaborators alongside the award winning author - John Hodge has enthralled us all with his insights into the gestation of the play and it’s array of characters. Collaborators is a rare treat theatrically - simultaneously hilarious, poignant, tragic and thought provoking.

As a Bath resident himself, John has been wonderfully supportive of the show and we have been blessed with an excellent cast (- it's very much a Collaborative experience!) Indeed, we are all looking forward to unveiling what is undoubtedly a very special performance for the Rondo Theatre Company!
