Social play reading:
POMONA
by Alistair McDowall
Tuesday 5th March, 6pm for a 6.30pm start
at the Museum of Bath at Work, Bath, BA1 2RH
All are welcome to our unrehearsed play readings where we get together to read and discuss a play, as well as have a chat and some snacks. Feel free to bring some nibbles and a drink to share - there will be time for socialising and discussing the script as well as reading.
We'll read the whole script over the course of the evening (script in hand) and everyone who attends should have the opportunity to read a section if they wish - or you are welcome to come and just listen if you are not familiar with the play.
Our first play reading of 2024 will be Alistair McDowall’s surrealist thriller, ‘Pomona’.
A bit about the play... ‘Pomona’ is a surrealist thriller written by Alistair McDowall that was commissioned by the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2014 before later transferring to the National Theatre in 2015 to great critical acclaim.
Featuring a whole host of enigmatic, scary and hilarious characters, and written in an episodic structure that is not always in chronological order, the mysteries and horrors of Pomona slowly build to a frightening, funny and fantastic climax that will allow for plenty of discussion afterwards…
4 female characters and 3 male characters (although at our social play readings everyone can have a go regardless of gender!)
From the blurb... “I think I’d sleep a lot easier if I knew none of us would wake up tomorrow. Ollie’s sister is missing. Searching Manchester in desperation, she finds all roads lead to Pomona - an abandoned concrete island at the heart of the city. Here at the centre of everything, journeys end and nightmares are born."
Please note: this play does feature strong language, violence, and references to sex and sexual violence.
The doors will be open at the Museum of Bath at Work from 6pm and we will start reading at 6.30pm, aiming to finish before 9pm. If you think you might be late, come anyway! You will still have the opportunity to read.
Please note: the room we are using at the Museum of Bath at Work is accessed via three flights of stairs.
