The Memory of Water by Shelagh Stephenson is a contemporary play set in a family home near the sea. It is an hilarious comedy with some quite dark themes. The action takes place in the bedroom and the scene is dominated by a double bed. There are six characters, of whom four are female.
The three sisters who have drifted apart over the years come together for the funeral of their mother. The play shows them reminiscing about the past and we witness them gradually getting closer to each other.
Catherine (youngest sister)
Mary (middle sister)
Teresa (eldest sister)
Mike, Mary ‘s secret lover
Frank, Teresa’ s husband
Vi, the sisters’ mother, a ghost
This play is a rare opportunity for four women to get their teeth into fully realised characters with the two men playing important but secondary roles.
22-25 March at the Rondo Theatre in Bath
